Achadh an Iúir

Achadh an Iúir ("field of the yew") derives from Old Irish roots, with iúir (yew) surviving in multiple place names across Ireland. The English name Virginia was bestowed in 1612 when King James I granted John Ridgeway a Crown patent to establish a plantation settlement, naming it after Queen Elizabeth I, the "Virgin Queen".
