Baile na Mainistreach, 'the town of the abbey,' takes its name from the Premonstratensian monastery of Druim La Croix established at Whiteabbey in the late 12th century. The abbey, a daughter house of Dryburgh Abbey in Scotland, housed the White Canons of the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré.
