Ráth Domhnaigh, meaning 'ringfort of the church,' takes its name from an earthen ringfort that stood near the town and was levelled in 1830. The settlement is documented in medieval records, appearing three times in the Annals of the Four Masters: in 874, when Flaithri mac Máel Dúin, Lord of Rath-Tamhnaighe, died; in 909, when his son Maelpadraig died; and again in 1069.
