Maigh Eo

Maigh Eo, or 'plain of the yew trees,' takes its name from the landscape that once characterized this locality. The Mayo monastic settlement was founded circa 668 A.D. by Saint Colman, a former Bishop of Lindisfarne, who departed Northumbria after the Synod of Whitby in 664 A.D. favoured Roman ecclesiastical practices over Celtic traditions.
