Salmon's leap
Leixlip is old Norse (lax hlaup) for salmon’s leaping place, the name given to the area by Vikings when they established a settlement said to be near the confluence of the rivers Liffey and Rye in the 9th century. This is a direct translation of the Irish, Léiman Bhradáin, meaning ‘Leap of the Salmon’ and is the basis for the name we use today.
