Mainistir Laoise

Mainistir Laoise (Abbey of Laois) derives from Irish 'mainistir' (monastery) and refers to the early monastic settlement at Abbeyleix. The monastery was originally founded around 600 AD, then refounded in 1183 by Conogher O'More with Cistercian monks brought from Baltinglass in Wicklow; the monastic complex was known by the Latin name Lex Dei ('God's law').
