The village of Abbeydorney takes its name entirely from the Cistercian abbey established here in 1154 by the Uí Thorna, a Gaelic sept who held this part of north Kerry. Mainistir Ó dTorna — "the monastery of the Uí Thorna" — made the abbey inseparable from the family who founded it and the landscape they controlled.
