Kilkea Castle was erected in 1180 by Hugh de Lacy, the Chief Governor of Ireland, for Norman knight Walter de Riddlesford during the period following the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169. The site had been granted to de Riddlesford by Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow.
