Classiebawn Castle was commissioned by Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, who served twice as British Prime Minister. After abandoning an initial attempt to build on nearby Dernish Island due to tidal constraints, Palmerston selected the Mullaghmore Peninsula headland as the location for his Irish country retreat.
