Liathmore Monastery was founded by St. Mochoemoc (also known as St. Mochua, circa 550–656 CE) in the 7th century. After receiving his monastic training under Saint Comgall at Bangor Abbey in County Down, St. Mochua obtained land from a local chieftain in a forested area near Lake Lurgan where he established the monastery.
