Tandragee Castle originally served as the stronghold of the O'Hanlon clan, who ruled the barony of Orior in southern Armagh as Gaelic lords for over a millennium. During the Plantation of Ulster in 1609–1610, the Crown confiscated O'Hanlon lands following the Nine Years' War.
