Monea derives from Irish Maigh Niadh, meaning 'plain of warriors,' reflecting the martial legacy of County Fermanagh and its historical significance as a stronghold region. The castle rose on the site of an earlier Maguire stronghold, the Maguire dynasty having dominated the region for nearly three centuries following Philip of the Battle Axe's reign from 1363 to 1395.
