Kilkenny Castle originated as a wooden fortification built around 1171 to 1173 by Richard de Clare, known as Strongbow, following the Norman invasion of Ireland. After Strongbow's daughter Isabel married William Marshal in 1189, lordship of Leinster passed to Marshall's control.
