Clifden Castle derives its name from An Clochán, an Irish term meaning 'stepping stones' or 'causeway,' referring to a ford across the Owenglin River at the site's location. The castle was constructed circa 1818 by John D'Arcy (1785–1839), a member of the Tribes of Galway, who founded the town of Clifden itself in 1812 when he was just twenty-six years old.
