Kilcooley Abbey was established in 1182 when Donal Mor O'Brien, King of Thomond, granted lands to the Cistercian order. Within two years, the monastery became a daughter foundation of Jerpoint Abbey in County Kilkenny, establishing it as part of the Cistercian network in Munster.
