Clodagh Castle originated in the late 12th century, built by David de Cogan following the Norman incursion as a strategic defensive fortress to control the region. When the MacCarthys displaced the de Cogans in the 14th and 15th centuries, Dermot Og McCarthy undertook a major rebuild of the structure.
