Clonenagh Church stands on the site of an ancient monastery founded around 548 by St. Fintan, a protégé of St. Colum of Terryglass, Co. Tipperary. The site became a significant early Christian ecclesiastical settlement, though the original monastic structures were destroyed in 838 by Viking raiders and again plundered in 937 by forces from Cashel and the Danes of Waterford.
