Castle Bernard, now known as Kinnitty Castle, has medieval roots on a site previously occupied by an Augustinian abbey. The original Norman fortification at Kinnitty was destroyed in 1209 and rebuilt in 1213 during the period when the O'Carrolls of Ely controlled the Kingdom of Ely O'Carroll.
